The mission of the Canaan Health Department is to prevent disease, maintain a healthy environment and promote community health for the citizens of the Town of Canaan. The Department of Health is responsible for protecting the health of the public including but not limited to: reviewing and approving septic and well installation and repairs, reviewing and approving improvements and additions that may impact the septic and/or well, inspecting restaurants. It shall be noted that the Canaan Department of Health is a part of the Torrington Area Health District and all communication and permits are through the Torrington Area Health District.

This document is required by the Canaan Health Department when any building addition or conversion is proposed. The Health department will review their existing files to see if any additional soils testing is required to confirm that a reserve area for the septic system will still exist on the property if an addition is constructed. Canaan Health Department Application for New Septic System Plan Approval
This document is required by the Canaan Health Department when a new septic system is proposed in the Town of Canaan. Prior to applying for approval, soils testing must be completed along with a complete septic system design. You must also apply for a Permit to Construct.
Canaan Health Department Application for Septic System Repair
This document is required by the Canaan Health Department when an existing septic system is failed and needs to be repaired.
Canaan Health Department Plan Review Application for Subdivision
This form must be filled out and submitted if you are proposing a subdivision or resubdivision. This document also provides instruction as it relates to the process. The Sanitarian will review the plans to ensure that all applicable requirements with regards to the placement of the proposed wells and primary and reserve septic areas are in accordance with the State of Connecticut Public Health Code.
Canaan Health Department Application for Swimming Pool
This application must be filled out by anyone installing a swimming pool in the Town of Canaan.
Canaan Health Department Signed Statement for Swimming Pool Installation
This application must be filled out by the property owner where the swimming pool is to be installed. It is a statement acknowledging if the septic system fails, the pool may have to be removed.
What is a Bedroom?
Septic system are sized based on the number of bedrooms of the house. This document gives guidance as to what constitutes a bedroom to the Town of Canaan Health Department as well as the Connecticut Department of Public Health.
What does B100a Mean?
People typically refer to a B100a review that is needed prior to the health department signing off on any new addition or new structure on a property. This document fully details what the entire B100a review process entails. Our office can perform an all inclusive B100a review for you if needed.
Canaan Health Department Application for Beauty Salon/Barber Shop
This application must be filled out by anyone proposing a beauty salon or barber shop in the Town of Canaan. Per theTorrington Area Health District, “In 1984, after the State Department of Public Health discontinued its inspection program, the TAHD adopted its own local regulations that provide for the licensing and inspection of Beauty Salons and Barber Shops. These facilities are inspected annually or as necessary to enforce the provisions of the regulation. In recent years the barber shop and beauty salon image has changed giving rise to unisex salons with a variety of services including nail treatments, tanning booths, facial treatments and hair removal. Our inspection includes a check to see that the staff is properly licensed as well as to ensure that the business is clean and properly maintained. All equipment must be cleaned and sanitized in accord with the provisions of the regulation. Whenever a shop is newly constructed or remodeled a copy of the plans must be submitted to the Health District for review and approval prior to the start of work. As of October 2000 Nail Technicians must have an occupational license obtained from the State of Connecticut.”
